conditions - Morning Sickness

Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy is a very common occurrence, and is commonly known as "morning sickness", although it can occur at any time of the day and is usually most severe between the 6th and 17th weeks, but especially during the 8th to 12th weeks. However in some cases it can occur for the duration of the pregnancy, or having ceased around the 17th week, for example, return again during the final weeks until birth

The severity of morning sickness varies greatly among women. Nausea can occur alone or be accompanied by vomiting. Often it occurs only at certain times of the day, for example the morning, however it may persist throughout the day. Factors such as fatigue, exercise and eating habits can influence the intensity of symptoms. The case of excessive vomiting, the main concern is dehydration which may require hospitalisation for intravenous fluid administration.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the body functions through a network of channels that distribute essential nutrients, such as Qi (energy) and Blood. During pregnancy its important to ensure proper smooth flow of Qi, Blood and fluids to uterus and surrounding areas. When there is poor circulation to this area and interfere with the descending action of the Stomach channel, it can lead to nausea and vomiting.

Treatment in TCM involves regulating and harmonising Stomach qi, while addressing any specific diagnostic patterns present in the pregnant woman. These patterns may include Qi deficiency, Qi stagnation, internal Cold or Heat, or accumulation of Phlegm/Dampness, for example, all of which can contribute to or aggravate symptoms. Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine, as well as other Chinese Medicine Modalities such as Moxibustion, Chinese Nutrition (Dietary Therapy) and Chinese Exercise Therapies such as Taiji Quan (Tai Chi) & Qi Gong are commonly used approaches in the treatment of morning sickness as well as maintain good health, wellness and vitality during the pregnancy process.
