Acupuncture & Chinese Herbal Medicine can be effective treatments for Asthma, and can be used along side Western Medicine.
Asthma is a very common chronic allergic inflammation of bronchial tubes that causes shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness and coughing, affecting many people around the world, and is especially common in children and the elderly. .
Chronic asthma can also cause further impairment of respiratory function, potentially leading to other diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary syndrome (COPD) over time, and affecting health and quality of life.
In Chinese Medicine, Asthma is called “Xiao Chuan” (哮喘) meaning wheezing (哮) (and) breathlessness (喘). Chinese medicine believes that there are multiple causative factors that can play a role in the onset and development of asthma. These factors can cause disharmony and weakness of various organs, such as deficiency of Lung, Spleen or Kidney energies, which are necessary for effective breathing and respiratory health
A Chinese Medicine Practitioner will make a differential diagnosis – to find out what syndrome pattern the an individuals asthma case belongs to such as 'phlegm retention in Lung' or deficiency in Lung, or Kidney, energy, for example. Then the most appropriate Acupuncture and/or Chinese Herbal medicine treatment plan for the individual can be designed and implemented, which may also include other relevant therapies Moxibustion or Cupping.
