conditions - Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) includes two conditions that cause swelling and irritation in your digestive tract: Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition in which contents move too fast or too slow through the intestines, usually accompanied by abdominal pain

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a very common intestinal disorder. Women are affected about 2-3 times more than men, with the average age of onset being between 20 and 40.

In Chinese Medicine, the spleen, liver, kidney, and large intestine can all play a role in the patterns of disharmony which can be associated with IBS.

The organs of the body, in Chinese Medicine theory are not only viewed as anatomical structures, but also as a set of systematic energetic units that function together. Therefore when Chinese Medicine talks about a spleen deficiency or liver problem, it does not necessarily mean there is damage to the physical organ, in most cases, but rather its energetic system and physiological functioinings.

IBS is a complicated disease, and often has a combination of Chinese Medicine patterns responsible for the resulting imbalance. The great many manifestations, underlying and root causes require very different treatment approaches in Traditional Chinese Medicine, therefore Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine treatments will be highly customised to the individual and their particular case
