conditions - Herniated ('slipped') Discs & Back Pain

A herniated disc is also called a “slipped disc”, "ruptured disc" or a “bulging disc”. This happens when pressure builds up on the spine’s nerves and muscles due to damage to the shock-absorbing cartilage. Prolapsed disc is also known as inflammation and swelling. This condition can cause severe pain in one area of your spine, such as the neck, lower back and sciatica, and radiate down your legs.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a conservative treatments for herniated, including lumbar disc herniation. Some studies have confirmed that some Chinese Medicine therapies have certain therapeutic effects on pain caused by disc herniation and stimulates the resorption of herniated disc.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been used for thousands of years to manage pain.

In Chinese Medicine theory, common causes of herniated disc pain can be from:

  • Injury to the spine
  • Invasion of cold wind or damp
  • Deficiency in liver or kidneys

Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Moxibutsion and Tuina Chinese Remedial Massage can be effective in treating herniated disc and associated pain. Chinese Medicine treatments for herniated discs often focus on strengthening Qi (lifeforce energy) and blood flow towards the kidneys, as well as clearing dampness and warming the lower back area
