conditions - Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition characterised by pain, stiffness and restriction of motion in the shoulder joint. It usually starts with pain, especially with movement of the shoulder, and there can be difficulty in executing simple daily actions like combing hair, putting on clothes or reaching for something on a high shelf.

Injury is due to the smooth tissues in the shoulder capsule become inflamed, thickens and tightens around the capsule of the shoulder joint. Scar tissues can develop over time and your range of motion becomes restricted. Any shoulder injury such rotator cuff injury, tendinitis or long-term immobility of the shoulder joint can also lead to frozen shoulder.

In Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, the kidney govern the bones and the liver regulates the circulation of Qi & Blood throughout the body, stores blood and regulates blood volume in the body. A defecient in the kidney and liver energy, as well as Yang Qi can lead to a weakening of the bones and musculoskeletal system.

Further, long term exposure to excessive wind, cold and/or damp can lead to stagnation of Qi and Blood in the meridians (energy channels) of the shoulders and especially over time, these factors causes Qi and Blood staganation (气滞血瘀), which resulting in shoulder pain and subsequently frozen shoulder.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine there is a saying: "If there is free flow, there is no pain. If there is no free flow, there is pain (通则不痛,不通则痛)."
