conditions - High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), High Blood Pressure, or Hypertension, is related to the liver, heart, and kidney not functioning properly.

While Chinese Medicine seeks to treat the root case of Hypertension it also recognises and treats the related symptoms of this including headache, stiff neck, and dizziness, as well as other related symptoms may include irritability, excess body heat, red eyes and face, insomnia, and high pitched ringing in one or both ears. In Chinese Medicine theory, these symptoms are considered a dysfunction of liver Qi energy, therefore the treatment principle in Chinese Medicine is to harmonise the Liver functions and engery to bring the body back into balance.

In addition to liver dysfunction, Chinese Medicine considers hypertension to also be related to dysfunctions in both the kidneys and the heart. It is usually the result of a long period of uncontrollable hypertension, which leads to heart related symptoms such as shortness of breath, heart palpitations, chest tightness, fatigue, edema, etc. The symptoms related to kidney include frequent urination, especially at night, swollen legs or feet, lower back pain, weakness or pain in the knees, dry mouth, dry eyes, and a low ringing tone in the ears.

The goal of Chinese Medicine treatment, such as Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine is to bring all these organ systems back into balance and harmony and keep the body’s Qi & blood flowing freely and smoothly.

Generally two treatments per week are best, based on the patient’s blood pressure level and their general health condition for the first three to five months. In most cases, Chinese Herbal Medicine is also recommended, with the most effective treatment outcomes found to be when Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine are used together.

Chinese Medicine has developed and tested these methods for almost three thousand years, they are safe, highly effective, and free of side effects.

Since Chinese Medicine addresses the root causes of high blood pressure and as well as resolving its related symptoms, the complete healing process may take a few months to over a year depending on the patient’s circumstances and severity. However, with regular Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine patients at Summer Hill Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, usually notice their blood pressure can start to improve after several weeks.
